What My Son Thinks I Do All Day (and What I Actually Do)

If you asked my son what I do, I’m fairly sure the answer would be something like “Mum just scrolls on her phone and drinks tea.”

And, to be fair to him, from the outside that’s what it looks like. So I thought I’d write down what’s actually happening during all that scrolling.

when he gets home from work he sees me on my phone or computer and he sits there and says ” have you got nothing better to do than scroll the internet or watch TikTok’s or instagram reels….. “

What it looks like vs what’s happening

What he sees What I’m actually doing
Staring at my phone Replying to people who’ve asked questions about getting started
Typing on the laptop with a brew Writing a blog post like this one
Watching a video Working through the next step of training
Muttering at the screen Rewriting an email for the fourth time
Scribbling on sticky notes Writing down my next step so I don’t lose my place

The four things I actually do

Write

Blog posts, emails, social posts. Most of my time is  spent writing honest, useful stuff so people have a reason to find me. I write in short bursts, a paragraph here, a section there, as otherwise I would burn myself out.

Test

I only share things I’ve tried. So part of my time is working through programmes like CBPC myself, taking notes, and seeing what’s actually useful before I say anything about it. I do this as  how could I share something and say that it works without throughly testing it myself, as to me that would be wrong, so I prefer to be honest if I haven’t tested it you would not know about it from me.

Reply

People message with questions. Usually they’re nervous beginners who’ve been burned before. I take time over those replies, because I remember being that person. I get so many message and emails, asking the same question ” I want to start something, but I don’t have the tech skills ” or “I paid a lot for a course and it just ripped me off so why should I trust you?” I understand these questions as I asked exactly the same ones many times, this is why I always answer comments, emails or messages.

Learn

There’s always something new to get my head round. The step-by-step training inside CBPC means I’m learning in a sensible order rather than falling down a rabbit hole of random videos. This is what I love about it, the videos are made with great detail in a simple language rather than tech speak, and they are easy to follow.

What a real day looks like

There’s no set pattern, because my week changes all the time. But a fairly typical day goes something like:

  • Morning:  No laptop. Depending how my night was depends on my motivation.
  • Mid-morning pocket (10-20 mins): one task. Maybe a section of a blog post.
  • Afternoon: Life happens, whatever comes up. Maybe a quick reply to a message on my phone. (This is the bit he sees.)
  • Tea time:  No laptop. My husband made dinner, so chill with the family
  • Evening pocket (10-20 mins, if I’ve got it in me): another small task.

It really isn’t glamorous. There’s no beach laptop, no fancy office. It’s a kitchen table, a mug of tea and a lot of sticky notes. Yes thats really my life.. between appointments for the GP, Hospital, Physio and the hairdressers….

Why I’m telling you this

Because the online world is full of people making it look either effortless or like a 24/7 grind. For me it’s neither. It’s small, steady, ordinary work that fits around being a mum and a wife.

If you’ve been put off because you think you’d need to be glued to a screen all day, I hope this helps. You don’t. You need a clear next step and a bit of time, a few times a week.

Will he ever understand?

Probably not. And that’s fine. I’m not sure I understood what my mum did all day either. As long as I’m there for chats and the advice, I don’t think he minds much.

If you want to see the step-by-step training I use in my pockets of time, it’s inside CBPC. Free to join, login by email the same day, add your ClickBank details and you’re set up, if you are curious then this is it.
